If ever there was an occasion to use the phrase "pack light" this is it. While preparing a trip to India repeat this phrase as a mantra. However you also need to bring some important items for your safety and comfort.

The larger cities in India are industrialized and have many of the modern items we consider necessities but they are not always easy to get. Be it razor blades, non AA batteries or sun block - bring your own supply since you never know when or where you will be able to re-stock.

Before you go further you'll have to decide if you are planning to backpack or if you are a suitcase traveler. Most people already know the answer, but it will make a little difference when you think about what you want to bring with you. Backpacking is generally more convenient if you are youthful enough for it, but bringing a suitcase is really no trouble. Indians generally travel with a suitcase from what I have seen.

With a suitcase keep in mind that it will need to be carried. The streets are very rough and a rolling suitcase will not make it far as all. Fortunately it is very easy to find someone to help for a small fee.
