Western India

Western India is made up of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Mumbai (formerly Bombay) is located in the state of Maharashtra and it one of India's great cities.

Highlights for the traveler:

  • Mumbai is a great city to visit if you avoid the tourist areas as much as possible. This famous town retains a taste of its British influence and drips with the sense of colonial history.
  • Pune the "Oxford of the East". Marvel at its 8th century cave temple, Pataleshwar. Pune is also known for its wonderful sweets!
  • Goa is Portuguese influenced with fine beaches and vibrant electronic music scene. A relaxed back state that will make you think you are not in India but rather on a different planet altogether.
  • Gujarat has been hosting human civilization for more than 4000 years. It is the only place outside of Africa to see Asiatic lions.
