The Lonely Planet India is THE travel guide to have while traveling. I have seen numerous travelers in India carrying this book and for good reason. You may choose to bring or buy other guides, but you really need this one. Things change quickly in India, so get the latest edition. It will have the best chance at having correct phone numbers and good up to date recommendations.

My Experience: I have relied on this book heavily in planning my trips and while on the road. It is so complete with details on every little practical thing, it is something akin to life saver. Its recommendations are trustworthy. Its descriptions are objective (and don't read into them, they are quite literal). There is plenty to explore that a book could never tell you about in the subcontinent, but what it does tell you is worth its weight in gold. If you take anything away from my guide, it is to get this book.
