Delhi

The arrival point for most westerners coming into India. Delhi's impression for the first time visitor is *never* good. It isn't that Delhi is a bad place but for the uninitiated it is quite more than overwhelming in many ways. Delhi has much to offer but getting to a point where it is possible to see what is there will take some time.

A travel guide for Delhi needs to be more of a survival guide. So this guide will begin with a few tips for the first time India visitor.

  • Plan ahead! Not only should you book a hotel in advance of arrival, you should also arrange with your hotel to have them pick you up at the airport. I cannot stress how important this is.
  • Do not go cheap with your first hotel. Spend a little more than you have budgeted for typical hotel stays. It is easy to stay cheap in India but for the first few nights stay somewhere comfortable.
  • Get a travel guide. I say more about this here, Print Travel Guide.
  • Relax! Your nerves are your own worst enemy.

Getting Around in Delhi
Delhi has a ton of auto rickshaw and cycle rickshaws at every street corner with their drivers encouraging to take a ride with them. The trip will quite often take you to several shops (even if that is not your stated destination) where the driver will earn a commission on anything you buy. If you do not mind the stop you will pay higher prices but is not necessarily a bad thing if you have no idea where you are going. If you do mind the stop is can be at time hard to get to where you really want to go however.

If you are really having trouble with a driver, take down their vehicle number and if still necessary tell them you will report them to the police. Do not be intimated.

Delhi also has a wonderful new underground train system, the Metro. This is a world class system that will leave your jaw on the floor compared to anything else in Delhi.

Finally Delhi has 2 train stations so make sure you are going to the correct station.
